This category contains courses that are offered as e-learning sessions.  In order to receive credit for these courses, please follow the instructions below:

Step 1.  Registration

  • Access the E-Learning on the DHS Service Training Website
  • There is no registration component

Step 2.  Attendance Verification - Complete the E-Learning course

  • The system electronically tracks your progression throughout the course, and you must complete it in its entirety
  • Complete the pre-test, if required
  • Complete the E-Learning on your individual computer
  • If you want to receive credit, this means not completing the E-Learning in groups as the system electronically tracks progression through the course
  • Complete the post-test, if required

Step 3.  Training Certificate

  • After completing the course, the Certificate will be available
  • Click the "Get your certificate" button to add it to your training history
  • You may also do a "Save As" or "Print" from the pop-up window containing your certificate




DS 169 Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training is required for all new SW2s, SW3s and Supervisors to the Iowa Department of Human Services. You are required to complete DS 169 Mandatory Child Abuse Reporter Training within the first six months of employment and every five years after that.


This course is open only to DHS and JCS employees and access is restricted. If you wish to enroll in this course, please make sure you have an account* tied to your DHS or JCS email address. You can enroll by clicking on the course title.


If you believe that you should have access, but are unable to enroll in the course, please contact the Technical Assistance contacts listed on the homepage of the Service Training website. Let them know that you wish to enroll in DS 169 Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training. If you also wish to enroll in DS 168 Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training you should specify that as well.


The certificate provides 2.4 hour of continuing education meeting the Board of Social Work Examiner's criteria; IBON Provider #94 awards 2 contact hours for nursing to DS 169 Mandatory Child Abuse Reporter Training, Approval #2090. The Iowa Department of Public Health approved this curriculum from March 16, 2016-2019.

This course explains the regulations and procedures related to confidentiality at the Iowa Department of Human Services . It covers client confidentiality, release of information, and best practices regarding confidentiality of information.

Participants will earn 1 hour of training credit, but no CEUs.

You may take this course for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for Social Work 

The HIPAA Privacy and Security course takes approximately 1 to 2 hours to complete.

Participants will earn 1.5 SW CEUs or 1.25 training credit hours.

The Pathway to Learning course is for new or promoted Social Worker II's, III's and Supervisors. This course will give you a overview of the training process and the New Social Worker Training Series as well as how to navigate through the combined blended learning on-line course work and in classroom trainings.

This online course provides the trainee with the foundational training and historic information on the management of cases in child welfare.

New hired SW2s, SW3s and SW Supervisors are required to take this course.

Participants will earn 2 training credit hours, but no CEUs.

This on-line self-instructional course from SAMHSA provides an understanding of addiction and what it does to the brain. The course identifies indicators of substance abuse, effects of various substances on the body and different types of substance abuse treatments. Trainees will use this information to facilitate the case plan development.

All SW2s, SW3s, and SW Supervisors need to take SP 105 - Understanding Substance Use Disorders, Treatment and Family Recovery: A Guide for Child Welfare Professionals.

Participants will earn 4.5 CEUs presented by NASW.

This on-line course familiarizes the trainee with the dynamics of domestic violence, the indicators of domestic violence, and identifies various domestic violence resources and referrals to services. Trainees will use this information to facilitate case plan development.

Newly hired SW2s, SW3s and SW Supervisors are required to take this course.

Participants will earn 2 training credit hours, but no CEUs.

Trainees will learn the impact of neglect and abuse on child development, the indicators of neglect and abuse, various resources and referral to services through this on-line course.  Trainees will use this information to facilitate the case plan development.

Newly hired SW2s, SW3s and SW Supervisors are required to take this course.

Participants will earn 2 training credit hours, but no CEUs.

The purpose of this course is to enhance social workers', supervisors' and Juvenile Court Officers' knowledge around quality case documentation and worker visits.  Completion of this course is optional.  The information is covered in SW 020 Foundations of Social Worker 2 Practice.
