Information about certificates and training credit

Certificates are issued for each course, and they serve as your training transcript. If you haven't received your certificate, then you are not counted as having completed the course.

To earn credit for a face-to-face training, you must fully attend the session. If you have questions regarding attendance, please email and your supervisor. We do not have the ability to issue partial credit. If you are unable to attend a session you are registered for, you need to cancel your registration. If you do not cancel your registration, your attendance will be recorded as a no-show.

You will not be able to access a certificate until you have completed all the pre-work, assignments, and the evaluation. This pre-work might include reading materials, quizzes, interactive activities, or videos. Videos are tracked and must be watched in their entirety to unlock the evaluation and certificate.

Information regarding training hours and CEUs

Certificates will state the number of training hours or CEUs earned. CEUs and training hours are calculated differently and used for differing purposes. CEUs are utilized for professional licensure; training hours are used within the State of Iowa for tracking ongoing professional development. One hour is equal to 60 minutes of instructional time. One CEU is equal to 50 minutes of instructional time. Therefore, the number of training hours and the number of CEUs will always differ slightly.

For more information regarding CEUs, please see the Guidelines for Licensees and Iowa Code Chapter 281 - Continuing Education for Social Workers in the Resource Documents.

Emergency / Inclement Weather Policy

When emergency situations or inclement weather prevent holding a training session,a notice will be put on the DHS Services Training Website as soon as possible and an email will be sent to registered participants.

Decisions involving inclement weather cancellations will be made at the earliest possible time. As a rule, information regarding a training session will be available on the website when there are concerns regarding weather conditions.

Please use your discretion for inclement conditions in your area. Weather may be okay at the training location but your local weather may be poor. If you need to cancel due to the weather conditions in your area - please send an email canceling your attendance with the name of the session to

Please note: Community Colleges will announce any closings on the radio and television. If any training sessions are scheduled at a Community College that is closed due to inclement weather, the training session is canceled.

In the event of a course cancellation, individuals need to report to their work unit.

Sessions canceled due to emergency or inclement weather will be scheduled for a later date.
